De juiste bandmaat begint bij de lugbreedte van je horloge. Die meet je nauwkeurig tussen de twee kastoren in millimeters. Veel horloges gebruiken 18, 20 of 22 millimeter. De band moet exact deze breedte hebben, omdat een afwijking speling of schade kan geven. Dat voorkomt miskopen.
Kijk daarna naar het bevestigingspunt, zoals een veerstift, schroefverbinding of geïntegreerde aansluiting. Een geïntegreerde band past vaak alleen op één specifieke kastvorm. Ook de lengte telt, vooral wanneer je pols smal of juist breed is. Meet daarom je polsomtrek en vergelijk die met de opgegeven bandlengte, want een sluiting hoort ruimte te laten zonder dat de kast rond je pols draait. Controleer tenslotte ook of de band taps toeloopt bij de sluiting.
Het materiaal bepaalt vooral hoe een horlogeband dagelijks aanvoelt. Leer vormt zich geleidelijk naar de vorm van je pols. Toch vraagt het zorg bij zweet en water. Rubber en siliconen verdragen vocht beter, waardoor ze vaak prettiger zijn tijdens sport of warme dagen. Metaal voelt doorgaans steviger en blijft langdurig vormvast.
Textiel droogt meestal snel, maar kan vuil en geurtjes vasthouden. Kies daarom een materiaal dat past bij je gebruikspatroon en huid. Wie een horloge afwisselend naar kantoor en tijdens een training draagt, kan beter twee banden kiezen, want leer droogt tussendoor beter na iedere draagbeurt en blijft daardoor langer mooi. Een stug materiaal kan irriteren. Bij Hirsch-horlogebanden vergelijk je ook de afwerking van de rand.
De sluiting bepaalt hoe veilig en precies je horlogeband dagelijks vastzit. Een klassieke gesp met gaatjes is eenvoudig en precies verstelbaar. Die past goed bij leren, rubberen en textielen banden. Een vouwsluiting geeft metaalbanden een verzorgde afwerking en beperkt het risico dat je horloge valt. Dat scheelt merkbaar slijtage.
Een vlindersluiting klapt aan twee kanten open en verdeelt de band symmetrisch over je pols. Bij intensief bewegen vragen magneetsluitingen extra aandacht, ondanks hun snelle verstelling. Controleer bij een metalen schakelband of je schakels kunt verwijderen, zodat de sluiting midden onder je pols kan vallen. Zo maak je de bandlengte passend. Voor een herkenbare stijl kun je ook Swatch-horlogebanden naast neutrale vervangbanden zorgvuldig vergelijken.
Goed onderhoud verlengt de bruikbare levensduur van elke horlogeband. Spoel een rubberen band na sport af met lauw water. Droog de band daarna met een zachte doek. Dat beperkt huidvet en zoutresten. Leer mag niet lang nat blijven, omdat het daardoor harder kan worden of verkleuren.
Wissel een leren band af wanneer je horloge dagelijks draagt. Door twee passende banden af te wisselen krijgt leer tijd om te drogen na gebruik, terwijl je voor natte dagen een waterbestendig alternatief gebruikt dat minder snel geurtjes vasthoudt. Bewaar losse banden plat en uit direct zonlicht. Vermijd agressieve schoonmaakmiddelen op leer en gecoate delen. Een sticker voor horloges verandert alleen het uiterlijk en vervangt geen versleten band.
Meetfouten veroorzaken meestal een band die niet goed aansluit. De volledige kastbreedte is niet hetzelfde als de gemeten lugbreedte. Meet dus altijd nauwkeurig tussen de twee kastoren. Dat voorkomt verkeerde bestellingen en onnodig terugsturen. Verwar ook een veerstift nooit met een vaste schroefverbinding.
Sommige horloges hebben een afwijkende vorm, waardoor een universele rechte band niet volledig goed langs de kast aansluit. Let ook goed op de dikte bij de aanzet. Een dikke band kan tegen de kast drukken of onder een strakke jas blijven haken. Koop niet alleen op basis van een foto, omdat kleur, structuur en glans per scherm verschillen en een band op je eigen kast in werkelijkheid vaak heel anders oogt. Controleer daarom altijd maat en aansluiting vóór je bestelt.
Je kiest sneller door eerst pasvorm en dagelijks gebruik vast te leggen. Noteer eerst nauwkeurig de lugbreedte en je volledige polsomtrek in millimeters. Bepaal daarna wanneer je het horloge gewoonlijk draagt. Voor sport en warme dagen is vochtbestendigheid meestal de leidende eigenschap voor jou. Bij werk of een diner weegt uitstraling meestal zwaarder.
Vergelijk vervolgens zorgvuldig de aansluiting met de aanwezige bevestiging op je kast. Een passende sluiting voorkomt dat je de lengte later onnodig opnieuw moet afstellen. Vlindersluiting is een sluiting met twee scharnierende delen die aan weerszijden openklappen. Daardoor blijft het banddeel symmetrisch en oogt de sluiting minder opvallend. Dit type komt voor bij metalen banden en bij sommige leren banden.
Schakelband is een metalen band die bestaat uit afzonderlijke verbonden delen. Door schakels te verwijderen of toe te voegen pas je de lengte aan. Controleer vooraf of de schakels met pennen, schroeven of een ander systeem zijn bevestigd.
Taps toelopend betekent dat een band bij de sluiting smaller wordt dan bij de kast. Dit geeft vaak een rustiger profiel en minder volume rond de pols. De breedte bij de aanzet blijft wel leidend voor de juiste pasvorm.
