Ook sluiting en afwerking bepalen of wisselen prettig blijft, vooral op plekken waar kleding of beweging regelmatig tegen het sieraad en de huid komt.

Lichaamssieraden kies je vooral op de plaats en het genezen piercingkanaal. Een navelpiercing vraagt meestal om een comfortabel gebogen staafje met twee uiteinden. Voor een tongpiercing werkt een recht staafje beter, terwijl een te korte maat druk op zwelling geeft.
Captive bead rings sluiten met een klemkogeltje. Dit vraagt bij het wisselen meer handigheid. Segmentringen ogen rustiger omdat het sluitdeel in het oor nauwelijks opvalt. Labrets zitten vaak prettig in lip of oor.
Kies voor een verse piercing altijd eerst het model dat je ervaren piercer adviseert. Een sieraad met scherpe rand kan het kanaal beschadigen tijdens het wisselen of slapen. Zoek je alleen decoratie voor je oorlel, dan passen Oorbellen vaak beter bij je wens.
De juiste maat voorkomt druk en verlies van lichaamssieraden. Dikte staat meestal in millimeters of gauge vermeld. Een hogere gaugewaarde betekent een dunnere staaf, terwijl millimeters directer vergelijken bij Europese maten.
Lengte meet je tussen de binnenkanten van de uiteinden bij een staafje. Bij een ring meet je de binnendiameter. Een staafje dat tijdens genezing te strak zit kan insnijden, terwijl een te lang exemplaar blijft haken.
Meet een bestaand passend sieraad met een schuifmaat voordat je bestelt. De maat van een balletje beschrijft alleen het uiteinde. Bij een recent gezette piercing kan een ogenschijnlijk passende maat toch te veel wrijving geven, omdat zwelling gedurende de eerste weken per plek en persoon duidelijk merkbaar kan verschillen. Bij twijfel helpt een professionele meting.
Het materiaal bepaalt comfort tijdens dragen en een rustige genezing. Implantaatgeschikt titanium is licht en bevat doorgaans geen nikkel of een nikkelhoudende legering. Chirurgisch staal is stevig, al verschilt de legering sterk per product.
Niobium is buigzaam, terwijl massief goud een passende legering voor huidcontact nodig heeft. Vergulde sieraden slijten sneller wanneer wrijving het dunne laagje aantast. Een glad gepolijst oppervlak houdt minder vuil vast.
Acryl en siliconen voelen tijdens kort gebruik vaak licht aan. Kies liever titanium bij een gevoelige of nieuwe piercing. Vraag bij twijfel naar materiaalspecificaties, omdat een handelsnaam niets zegt over de exacte samenstelling. Past een piercingmodel niet bij je stijl, dan biedt het bredere aanbod van Sieraden andere draagopties.
Veilig wisselen doe je pas bij een rustig piercingkanaal. Was je handen grondig voordat je een sieraad aanraakt. Reinig het sieraad zorgvuldig volgens het advies van je piercer of de fabrikant.
Een implantaatclaim vraagt om controleerbare informatie, zoals ASTM F136 voor titaniumlegeringen die vaak bij implantaattoepassingen worden gebruikt. ISO 10993 behandelt biologische beoordeling van medische hulpmiddelen. Een normvermelding helpt bij vergelijken, terwijl maat, afwerking en hygiëne ook moeten passen bij een genezende piercing tijdens dagelijks gebruik op gevoelige plekken van het lichaam.
Europese REACH-regels beperken de nikkelafgifte van sieraden bij langdurig direct huidcontact. EN 1811 is een testmethode voor nikkelafgifte uit sieraden en andere producten met direct huidcontact. Pijn vraagt beoordeling.
Regelmatig onderhoud houdt lichaamssieraden schoon en langer draagbaar. Spoel afneembare sieraden na elk draagmoment af met lauwwarm water en milde zeep. Droog schroefdraad zorgvuldig, zodat opgedroogd vocht het vastdraaien later niet bemoeilijkt.
Draai een balletje nooit met gereedschap vast als dit het schroefdraad beschadigt. Bewaar losse onderdelen apart in een droog doosje. Beschadigde coating kan snel verkleuren en vraagt meestal om volledige vervanging.
Controleer bij externe schroefdraad altijd of het uiteinde glad langs het kanaal kan bewegen. Intern schroefdraad laat alleen een glad staafdeel door de piercing gaan. Wie geen piercing heeft, kiest beter een accessoire zoals Ringen, omdat die zonder piercingkanaal op hun plaats blijven. Vervang versleten sluitingen daarom tijdig.
Gauge is een maataanduiding voor de dikte van een staafje of ring. Een hoger gaugegetal staat voor een dunnere maat. Vergelijk de waarde altijd met millimeters, omdat beide systemen naast elkaar voorkomen.
Labret is een staafje met een vlak achterplaatje en een verwisselbaar uiteinde. Dit model wordt vaak gebruikt in lip en oor. Het vlakke deel vermindert uitstekende delen aan de achterzijde.
ASTM F136 is een norm voor een specifieke titaniumlegering die bij implantaattoepassingen wordt gebruikt. De norm maakt de legering beter controleerbaar. Controleer daarnaast altijd maat, afwerking en herkomst van het sieraad.
Intern schroefdraad betekent dat het schroefdraad in het staafje zit. Daardoor gaat een glad deel door het piercingkanaal tijdens het inbrengen. Dat kan prettiger zijn dan een staafje met schroefdraad aan de buitenkant.
EN 1811 is een testmethode voor het meten van nikkelafgifte uit producten met direct huidcontact. De test helpt bij het beoordelen van nikkelrisico. Hij zegt niet op zichzelf dat een sieraad voor elke piercing geschikt is.
REACH is Europese regelgeving die onder meer de nikkelafgifte van sieraden beperkt. De regels zijn gericht op langdurig huidcontact. Een vermelding helpt je vergelijken, al blijft materiaalinformatie van de fabrikant nodig.
