De klacht bepaalt welke lipverzorging het beste past. Een dagelijkse balsem beschermt vooral tegen droogte door wind, kou of droge binnenlucht. Bij pijnlijke kloven is gerichte behandeling logischer. Dat werkt beter. Kies een lippenbalsem voor dagelijks gebruik als je vooral bescherming en comfort zoekt.
Sticks blijven schoner onderweg. Een potje is handig voor een dikke nachtlaag. Tubes doseren precies zonder dat je met je vingers in de formule komt. Wanneer je lippen terugkerend openspringen of branden, vraagt dat om meer aandacht dan een gewone beschermlaag. Een getinte formule geeft kleur. Kijk dan ook naar de ingrediënten die het product bevat.
Ingrediënten bepalen hoe lang een laagje op je lippen blijft. Vetten en wassen verminderen vochtverlies door een afsluitende film te vormen. Petrolatum werkt daarbij zeer afsluitend. Plantaardige oliën voelen vaak lichter. Bijenwas of candelillawas geeft stevigheid, waardoor een stick ook bij warmte beter zijn vorm behoudt.
Humectanten zoals glycerine trekken vocht aan in de bovenste huidlaag. Zonder beschermende vetfase kan dat vocht alsnog verdampen. Lanoline verzacht vaak goed en geeft een rijke laag. Formules met veel parfum of smaakstoffen kunnen bij gevoelige lippen eerder prikken of irriteren, vooral wanneer de huid al beschadigd is. Parfum kan prettig ruiken. Kies liever een korte formule als je vaak reageert.
Zonbescherming voorkomt vooral UV-schade aan onbedekte lippen. Kies overdag een formule met SPF als je buiten bent. Dit beperkt schade. Breng het product ruim aan op beide lippen en de liprand. Een SPF-formule beschermt pas goed wanneer je die na eten, drinken, zwemmen of afvegen opnieuw gebruikt.
Wind en vorst versterken het gevoel van droogte. Een occlusieve laag blijft dan doorgaans langer zitten dan een dunne olie. Heb je naast je lippen ook last van een droge of gevoelige gezichtshuid, dan past het bredere aanbod van huidverzorging beter bij die routine. Lippen hebben geen talgklieren. Bescherm ze daarom vooraf bij sport, winters weer of een lange wandeling.
Een vaste routine voorkomt dat je lippen steeds opnieuw uitdrogen. Breng een beschermende laag aan voordat je naar buiten gaat. Herhaal dit wanneer het laagje verdwenen is. Likken lijkt tijdelijk te helpen. Speeksel verdampt snel en kan het trekkerige gevoel daarna versterken.
Gebruik een potje alleen met schone handen of een spateltje. Deel lipproducten niet wanneer iemand koortslipklachten heeft. Een dikke laag voor de nacht kan prettig zijn, omdat het product dan langer blijft liggen en minder vaak wordt weggeveegd. Schilfers hoef je niet los te trekken. Dat veroorzaakt snel kleine wondjes. Dep je lippen na het eten voorzichtig droog.
Aanhoudende kloven of branderigheid vragen soms om medische beoordeling. Cheilitis kan roodheid, schilfering en pijn rond de liprand geven. Gewone balsem is dan niet altijd genoeg. Laat terugkerende klachten beoordelen. Een arts of apotheker kan helpen zoeken naar een mogelijke oorzaak.
Kies medicinale lippenbehandeling wanneer een product bedoeld is voor een specifieke klacht en volg altijd de gebruiksinstructie. Gebruik geen sterk werkzame crème op eigen initiatief als de lippen open of ontstoken zijn. Producten met een koelend gevoel kunnen bij beschadigde lippen juist prikken. Stop bij duidelijke irritatie. Vraag ook advies bij zwelling, blaasjes, korsten of klachten die niet verbeteren.
Je kiest sneller door eerst je hoofdklacht en gebruiksmoment te bepalen. Een stick past goed in een jaszak. Een potje is prettig voor een royale nachtlaag. SPF past bij buitengebruik. Een kleur of glans is vooral een voorkeur.
Lees daarna of de formule parfum, smaakstoffen of bekende allergenen bevat. Zoek bij droogte naar wassen, oliën of petrolatum die een beschermende laag vormen. Bij gebarsten lippen is een rijke textuur vaak fijner, omdat die langer blijft zitten en minder snel verdwijnt door drinken. Test een nieuw product eerst beperkt. Zo merk je sneller of je lippen rustig blijven. Kies ten slotte een verpakking die je echt hygiënisch gebruikt.
Petrolatum is een minerale koolwaterstofmix die een sterk afsluitend laagje op de huid vormt. Het beperkt verdamping van vocht en helpt bij schrale plekken. De stof voegt zelf weinig water toe.
Humectant is een stof die water aantrekt en vasthoudt in de bovenste huidlaag. Glycerine is een bekend voorbeeld. Humectanten werken het prettigst samen met een vetlaag die verdamping beperkt.
SPF is een aanduiding voor de bescherming tegen vooral UVB-straling. Een hogere SPF laat bij correct gebruik minder UVB door. Breng een product opnieuw aan na eten, drinken of afvegen.
Lanoline is een wolvetachtige stof die de huid verzacht en vochtverlies helpt verminderen. De stof geeft vaak een rijke textuur. Sommige mensen vermijden lanoline bij een bekende overgevoeligheid voor wolvet.
Occlusieve laag is een beschermende film die vochtverlies via de huid vermindert. Wassen en petrolatum vormen zo'n laag. Dit is vooral nuttig bij droogte door kou, wind of droge lucht.
Cheilitis is een verzamelnaam voor ontsteking van de lippen met roodheid, schilfers of kloven. De oorzaak kan verschillen per persoon. Bij aanhoudende klachten past soms medicinale lippenbehandeling.
