Regelmatig onderhoud houdt de filterwerking en luchtstroom langer op peil. Controleer het voorfilter elke twee tot vier weken. Stof en haren blokkeren anders de aanzuigzijde. Een schone buitenkant voorkomt ook dat vuil opnieuw in de kamer terechtkomt.
Vervang een fijnstoffilter volgens het aangegeven interval of eerder wanneer geur en luchtstroom merkbaar veranderen. De gebruiksduur hangt af van vervuiling, ventilatorstand en dagelijkse draaitijd. Een filterindicator helpt, maar meet niet altijd de werkelijke verzadiging van elk filtermateriaal. Houd daarom ook je eigen gebruik bij.
Reinig een HEPA-filter alleen wanneer de fabrikant dat nadrukkelijk toestaat. Uitkloppen of wassen kan de vezelstructuur beschadigen, waardoor fijne deeltjes minder goed worden opgevangen. Wie veel last heeft van pollen of rook kiest beter een apparaat met goed verkrijgbare vervangfilters en onderhoudsinstructies, omdat je daarmee voorkomt dat het toestel blijft staan wanneer vervanging nodig is. De beste plaats geeft een luchtzuiveraar vrije ruimte rond de aanzuigopening. Zet hem op een vlakke ondergrond. Houd ramen en deuren tijdens intensief filteren zoveel mogelijk gesloten. Buitenlucht voert anders steeds nieuwe pollen of fijnstof aan.
Een sensorstand reageert op gemeten vervuiling, waarbij je moet controleren welke deeltjes de sensor werkelijk detecteert. Goedkope sensoren meten vaak vooral grotere stofdeeltjes, terwijl geurstoffen en ultrafijne deeltjes buiten beeld kunnen blijven. Een automatische stand is dus niet altijd genoeg.
Let ook op het geluidsniveau bij de stand die je 's nachts gebruikt. Een laag opgegeven geluid geldt soms alleen op de laagste stand, terwijl hogere luchtverplaatsing meer hoorbare ventilatorruis veroorzaakt. Een ventilator verplaatst lucht in de kamer. Zonder filter haalt hij geen deeltjes uit die lucht. Gebruik een luchtzuiveraar nooit als vervanging voor ventilatie, want het toestel verwijdert geen kooldioxide of vocht uit de kamer en frisse buitenlucht verbetert de luchtkwaliteit op andere manieren tegelijk.
CADR is de hoeveelheid gefilterde lucht die een toestel per uur levert bij een vastgestelde test. Een hogere waarde past bij grotere ruimtes of meer luchtwisselingen. Vergelijk alleen waarden voor hetzelfde type vervuiling, omdat pollen, rook en stof verschillend kunnen scoren.
Een HEPA-filter is een vezelfilter dat zeer kleine zwevende deeltjes uit een luchtstroom afscheidt. De klasse zegt meer dan alleen de naam op de verpakking. Een geclassificeerd filter helpt bij pollen en fijnstof, mits lucht niet langs het filter kan lekken.

Actieve kool is poreus koolstofmateriaal dat geurmoleculen en bepaalde gasvormige stoffen door adsorptie vasthoudt. De hoeveelheid kool en de contacttijd bepalen de werking. Het materiaal raakt verzadigd en moet periodiek worden vervangen. Een dun laagje werkt beperkt bij sterke geuren.
Een voorfilter is een eerste filterlaag die haren, pluisjes en grove stofdeeltjes opvangt. Het ontlast het fijnere hoofdfilter en ondersteunt een vrije luchtstroom. Je kunt een voorfilter vaak reinigen, maar volg daarvoor altijd de aanwijzingen van de fabrikant.
